For some parents, and some students, getting themselves or their kids to school can present itself as a challenge. In other cases parents prefer not to send their kids to a school and home school them instead. It is supposedly for these reasons that Republicans highly support Senate-Bill 619. "[The bill] means increased opportunities for students and parents to make a choice that works for them," said Ari Adler, a spokesman for Jase Bolger who is the Republican Speaker of the House (AnnArbor.com). Presently, the state of Michigan is only allowed to have two cyber schools which can only enroll four hundred students their first year of operation, and up to a thousand in any years after. The bill proposes an increase in the number of cyber schools and the enrollment of students: 5 by December 31st, 2013, 10 by December 31st, 2014, and 15 after that - all with enrollment caps at 2500 the first year, 5000 the next, and up to 10,000 in any years after that. In April of this year, the bill was passed 56-54 in the Michigan House of Representatives then was sent back to the Senate with changes. Even though the bill seems to be advancing through the system, there are still many arguments about the pros and cons.

The Lansing School District has been experiencing a significant decline in student enrollment and consequently a large budget deficit. Such problems are a huge cost to the city. Currently, the school district has about a $30 million dollar budget deficit (Norman) and is losing more and more money as people move out of the city and the schools. While these problems exist, Lansing needs to come up with some effective solutions that would hopefully increase enrollment numbers and decrease the deficit. In terms of the deficit, this may mean closing down schools, and in terms of increasing enrollment and decreasing dropout rates, it may mean discovering or creating programs that encourage students to attend, and stay, in Lansing Schools.

Seven Detroit high schools were revealed Thursday as participants in the second phase of the "Networks of Excellence" initiative. The initiative is administered by the United Way for Southeastern Michigan. Additionally, in a considerable act of corporate largesse, the General Motors Foundation is granting $27.1 million to fund the initiative. The program is an expansion of the initial phase first launched in 2008; funding for the initial phase of the program was provided by the Skillman Foundation and AT&T.
