    1822 - Dr. William Beaumont at Mackinaw begins study of the human digestive process through a hole in the stomach of Alexis St. Martin

    1832- Cholera epidemic devastates Detroit with Belle Isle being used to quarantine.

    1834- Second Cholera epidemic wipes out a seventh of the population in Detroit. Kills Governor George B. Porter

    1850- University of Michigan establishes the state’s first medical school.

    1859- Michigan’s first mental health facility opened in Kalamazoo

    1869- The Nation’s first university hospital is established by the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

    1873- Michigan Department of Public Health is created, just the fifth in that nation.

    1906- University of Michigan establishes one of the first Departments of Psychiatry in the nation

    1919- Nationwide Influenza Epidemic kills 3,814 in Detroit.

    1964- Medicaid established with the passing of the Title XIX of the Social Security Act

    1965- Medicare established as part of the Social Security Act Amendments

    1973- An accident mixing fire retardant with cattle feed leads to a public health crisis.

    1974- The Michigan Mental Health Code passes standardizing guidelines, protocols and definitions concerning issues of mental health.

    1978- The Michigan Public Health Code passes, standardizing guidelines, protocols and definitions concerning issues of public health.

    1985- Detroit’s first heart transplant performed.

    1996- Michigan Department of Community Health is created as a consolidation of the Michigan Department of Public Health, Department of Mental Health, and Medical Services Administration, and later the Office of Drug Control Policy and the Office of Services to the Aging

    2003- Michigan becomes the first state to have its own Surgeon General when Governor Granholm appointed Kimberlydawn Wisdom M.D.

    2005- Governor Granholm proposes plan to ensure health care to all Michigan residents.

    2008- First human case of West Nile Virus detected in Michigan
